James Rodríguez scripted history by becoming Colombia’s most-capped World Cup player, overtaking Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincón’s long-standing record.
By starting against Portugal, Rodríguez earned his 11th World Cup appearance, surpassing the joint record of 10 held for 28 years. He achieved this across the 2014, 2018, and 2026 tournaments, starting all three group-stage matches this year. His milestone cements his place as Colombia’s most influential outfield player.
Colombia’s clash with Portugal ended 0-0, marking their first goalless World Cup result in 64 years. The draw ended a streak of 23 consecutive matches with at least one goal since their debut in 1962. Despite the stalemate, Colombia dominated with 55% possession, 26 shots, and 23 touches inside Portugal’s box. Diogo Costa produced six saves, while Davinson Sánchez’s stoppage-time strike was ruled out by VAR for offside.
Luis Díaz stretched Portugal’s defence with his runs, while Rodríguez orchestrated play from midfield, threading key passes and controlling tempo. Colombia’s tactical superiority failed to produce a breakthrough, but their unbeaten run secured top spot in Group K.
Colombia will now face Ghana in the Round of 32, marking their fourth progression beyond the group stage in seven World Cup appearances. Portugal, finishing second, will meet Croatia in their knockout tie.
