In a significant push towards modernising and securing India’s vast railway network under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav spirit, Indian Railways has sanctioned the deployment of the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across 631 Route Kilometres of East Coast Railway at a cost of ₹270 crore.

This landmark approval marks a major milestone in the nationwide expansion of Kavach, India’s homegrown solution to some of the biggest challenges in train operations — signal passing at danger (SPAD), overspeeding, and collision risks.

The project will cover six critical sections of the East Coast Railway zone:

  • Baghuapal–Budhapank
  • Haridaspur–Paradeep
  • Khurda Road (KUR)–Balangir
  • Naupada–Gunupur
  • Lanjigarh Road–Junagarh
  • Bobbili–Salur

These routes are vital arteries for both passenger and freight movement, serving the industrially growing regions of Odisha and connecting to neighbouring states.

How Kavach Transforms Railway Safety

Developed indigenously by Indian Railways and its partners, Kavach is an advanced ATP system that acts as a vigilant co-pilot for loco pilots. It continuously monitors train speed and position, automatically applies brakes if the driver misses a signal, exceeds speed limits, or risks collision. The system uses an LTE-based communication backbone for real-time data exchange between trains, signals, and control centres.

Beyond collision avoidance, Kavach dramatically improves operations during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog — a common challenge in many parts of eastern India — ensuring trains run more punctually and reliably.“This deployment will not only enhance safety but also boost the confidence of both passengers and freight operators on these busy corridors,” a senior Railway Ministry official noted.

Part of a Bigger Vision

The East Coast Railway project is an integral part of Indian Railways’ ambitious plan to equip high-density and strategically important routes with Kavach. By strengthening safety infrastructure with indigenous technology, the national transporter aims to achieve global standards in railway safety while promoting Atmanirbhar Bharat.

With this approval, East Coast Railway is set to become significantly safer and more efficient, benefiting millions of passengers and supporting the economic lifeline of freight movement in the region.

The project is expected to be rolled out in phases, with full benefits visible as Kavach-equipped locomotives and stations come online in the coming years.
