In a swift and firm response to a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the horrific mob assault, molestation, and public stripping of a 22-year-old woman intern in Rayagada, Odisha.

The barbaric attack occurred on 16 June 2026, when a frenzied mob targeted the young woman following false rumours that she and her colleagues were “child kidnappers.” The incident has once again highlighted the dangerous consequences of unchecked misinformation and mob vigilantism in India.

In a strongly worded statement, the NCW condemned the incident in the harshest terms and has directed the Director General of Police, Odisha, to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.

What the Commission is Demanding:

  • Copy of the FIR and the specific provisions invoked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023
  • Current status of the investigation and arrests made
  • Action taken against those responsible for spreading the dangerous rumours
  • Details of medical care, counselling, and rehabilitation provided to the survivor
  • Measures adopted to ensure the safety of NGO workers and interns in the region
  • Steps taken to prevent future instances of mob vigilantism through community policing and public awareness campaigns

The NCW has emphasised that such acts of mob violence against women cannot be tolerated in a civilised society and has urged authorities to act with utmost urgency and sensitivity.

This case comes amid growing national concern over rising incidents of mob attacks triggered by viral rumours, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The young intern, who was working with an NGO, became the victim of collective hysteria that turned deadly within moments.

The Commission has also reminded citizens of its 24×7 helpline — 14490 — urging anyone in distress to reach out for immediate support.

As the seven-day deadline looms, all eyes are now on the Odisha Police to deliver swift justice and send a strong message that mob violence and rumour-mongering will not go unpunished.
