A devastating fire engulfed a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Sunday, leaving at least 15 students dead and several others injured.

The building housed a pet clinic and an animation/gaming training centre, where many of the victims were attending classes.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic as students attempted to escape, with some leaping from upper floors to save themselves. Rescue teams from the Fire Department, NDRF, SDRF, and Civil Defence worked tirelessly, drilling through walls and using ropes to lower trapped individuals. Cooling operations continued late into the evening as authorities battled lingering flames.

Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze may have been triggered by a short circuit, though forensic teams will conduct a detailed probe. The tragedy also claimed the lives of several animals inside the pet clinic, with rescuers recovering at least three carcasses.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak broke down while briefing reporters, underscoring the emotional toll of the disaster. Families gathered outside the building, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and announced ex-gratia payments of ₹2 lakh for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cut short his Aligarh visit, ordered a high-level inquiry, and directed officials to provide immediate assistance and medical care. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and BSP chief Mayawati also conveyed condolences.

Authorities are now examining fire safety compliance at the site, with officials vowing strict action if lapses are found. The incident has reignited concerns over urban fire safety standards and preparedness in densely populated commercial zones.

This tragedy stands as a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust safety measures in public spaces, where young lives and livelihoods converge.
