Police torture in Kendrapara

A woman and her son accused police personnel at Talchua Marine Police Station in Odisha’s Kendrapara district of subjecting them to third-degree torture.

According to the complaint filed with Pattamundai SDPO, Annapurna Mandal (58) and her son Ananta Kumar Mandal from Giriapahi village visited the police station on May 25 to lodge a complaint over a family dispute. Annapurna alleged that IIC Sandhyarani Jena abused her, dragged her by the hair, slapped her, and wiped off her sindoor. She claimed that her son was taken inside a toilet and beaten brutally by the IIC and a constable.

The complainant said the officers tried to strangle her son and threatened both not to disclose the incident. She alleged that police seized Ananta’s mobile phone and forced them to sign blank papers. The duo remained detained and tortured from 6 pm to 11:40 pm before being released.

Family members later took them home in an auto-rickshaw as they could not walk due to injuries. The next morning, they were admitted to Rajnagar Community Health Centre for treatment, where medical examination revealed injury marks on Annapurna’s hands and on Ananta’s neck, hands, legs, and back.

Pattamundai SDPO Sukanta Kumar Patra confirmed receipt of the complaint and said the matter had been brought to the notice of the Superintendent of Police. He assured that appropriate action would follow after the investigation.
