Meta Suspends Accounts of Oslo Journalist Who Challenged PM Modi, MEA on Press Freedom and Human Rights

A viral interaction involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng has triggered a major online debate over press freedom, journalism and social media moderation.

The controversy escalated after Lyng claimed that her Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp accounts linked to Meta Platforms were suspended shortly after she posted a viral video questioning PM Modi during his Norway visit.

Viral Video From Oslo Sparks Debate

The incident took place during PM Modi’s visit to Oslo, where he attended a joint press event with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

A video shared online by Helle Lyng showed PM Modi leaving the venue while a voice — identified as Lyng’s — asked why he does not take questions from the “world’s freest press.”

In her post, Lyng referenced the World Press Freedom Index rankings, stating that Norway ranks among the world’s freest media environments while India ranks significantly lower.

The clip quickly went viral across X, Instagram and other social media platforms, drawing both support and criticism.

Journalist Claims Meta Accounts Were Suspended

Following the viral post, Lyng later claimed on X that her Instagram and Facebook accounts had been suspended.

She stated that she was unable to respond to messages and reactions due to the suspension.

According to screenshots shared online, her Instagram account reportedly displayed a notice stating that the account had been suspended and could face permanent deactivation unless appealed within 180 days.

The exact reason for the suspension has not been officially confirmed by Meta.

Lyng described the development as “a small price to pay for press freedom.”

Faceoff With India’s MEA

The controversy expanded further during a media briefing by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), where Lyng questioned Indian officials over democracy, trust and human rights.

Addressing MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George, the journalist asked why people should trust India and whether the country would address concerns regarding press freedom and human rights.

In response, Sibi George defended India’s democratic institutions, Constitution and judiciary.

He highlighted India’s scale and democratic structure, stating that citizens whose rights are violated have legal remedies through courts and constitutional mechanisms.

The exchange has since gone viral online, with users debating media freedom, diplomatic communication and the role of confrontational journalism.

Journalist Says “I Am Not A Spy”

As speculation intensified online, Lyng issued multiple clarifications on social media.

She denied allegations that she was linked to any foreign government or intelligence operation.

“I am not a foreign spy,” she wrote, adding that journalism often involves asking difficult and uncomfortable questions to those in power.

She also defended her style of questioning, saying journalists have a responsibility to seek direct answers rather than accept prepared talking points.

PM Modi’s Norway Visit

PM Modi’s Norway visit was part of his larger multi-nation diplomatic tour across Europe and the Middle East.

The trip focused on:

  • Trade partnerships
  • Strategic cooperation
  • Clean energy
  • Technology collaboration
  • India-Europe connectivity initiatives

During the visit, India and Norway also discussed deeper cooperation in Arctic research, green energy and maritime sectors.

Social Media Divided Over Incident

The episode has sharply divided internet users.

Some users praised the journalist for raising questions on press freedom, while others criticised the tone and timing of the interaction.

Others questioned whether the suspension of Meta accounts was directly linked to the controversy or resulted from unrelated moderation policies.

As of now, Meta has not publicly commented on the matter.
