Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has made it clear that he still dreams of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup, but only if he feels trusted and valued within the Indian team environment.
In a deeply personal conversation on the latest Royal Challengers Bengaluru podcast with presenter Mayanti Langer, Kohli spoke about motivation, pressure, preparation and why he no longer plays cricket to prove himself to others.
Kohli Still Wants to Play 2027 World Cup
The former India captain said representing the country at another World Cup remains a special ambition.
“Playing a World Cup for India is amazing,” Kohli said, while adding that his continuation depends on whether the team management believes he still adds value to the side.
The batting icon explained that he no longer wants to operate in an environment where he constantly feels the need to justify his place.
“If I am made to feel like I need to constantly prove my worth and value, then I am not in that space,” Kohli said.
“I Play Because I Love the Game”
Kohli revealed that his return to cricket after a six-month break last year was driven purely by his love for batting and competition, not external validation.
The 37-year-old said he prepares with complete commitment every day, maintaining strict fitness, discipline and diet standards throughout the year.
“When I arrive to play, I give my absolute best,” Kohli said, adding that he is still willing to run “boundary to boundary for 40 overs” if the team needs him.
Kohli’s ODI Form Remains Strong
Despite retiring from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, Kohli continues to dominate in ODIs and the IPL.
Following his return from a break, he scored heavily in international cricket with multiple centuries and half-centuries, strengthening calls for his inclusion in India’s 2027 World Cup plans.
Kohli has already won nearly every major title in world cricket, including the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and the IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Selection Uncertainty Still Remains
Even though Kohli remains one of India’s top ODI performers, uncertainty around the long-term plans of selectors and team management continues.
Reports suggest chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have not yet fully committed to India’s 2027 World Cup core.
Still, Kohli’s current form and fitness make him one of the strongest contenders for the marquee tournament in South Africa.

Kohli also spoke candidly about how mixed messaging from management can affect players mentally.
“If you believe I am good enough, then stand by it,” he said.
The veteran batter stressed that while performances can fluctuate, commitment and effort should never be questioned.
“Performance can never be guaranteed, but effort always can,” Kohli added.
