Former Kantabanji MLA and senior BJD leader Haji Md. Ayub Khan, popularly known as Ayub Khan, passed away on Wednesday morning at his residence in Kantabanji.
He was 78. Reports confirmed that Khan breathed his last around 8.30 am after a prolonged illness, leaving Kantabanji and nearby areas in mourning.
Ayub Khan entered the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2004 as an Independent candidate from Kantabanji. Later, he joined the Biju Janata Dal and secured victory again in 2014 as a party candidate. Throughout his political career, Khan contributed significantly to the development of Kantabanji and remained closely connected with public issues in the region. His leadership earned him respect among locals and party workers alike.
Political leaders, supporters, and residents expressed grief over his demise, recalling his role in strengthening the constituency. BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik also paid tribute, describing Khan as a skilled organiser and compassionate leader. Patnaik stated, “The work he has done for the development of the region and the service of the people will forever immortalise him.” He extended condolences to Khan’s family after speaking with his son, Dr Amjad Alli Khan.
Ayub Khan’s passing marks the end of an era in Kantabanji politics, where his influence shaped local development and party organisation. His absence leaves a void in the BJD and among the people he served.
