In a significant step toward strengthening international collaboration, Stefan Priesner, the UN Resident Coordinator in India, met Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.
The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the Government of Odisha across key development sectors.
Focus on Agriculture and Sustainable Growth
During the discussions, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted Odisha’s contribution to India’s vision of self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. He emphasised that agriculture remains a top priority for the state, with continued efforts to increase farmers’ income, adopt climate-resilient practices, and strengthen agricultural value chains. Officials also discussed ways to enhance rural livelihoods through sustainable development strategies.
Renewable Energy and Innovation Opportunities
Both sides explored opportunities to position Odisha as a hub for renewable energy and innovation. The discussions included potential collaboration in technology transfer, capacity building, and clean energy initiatives. The UN delegation appreciated Odisha’s progress in energy transition and expressed willingness to support future projects aligned with sustainability goals.
Tourism and Cultural Heritage in Spotlight
Tourism and heritage conservation were key aspects of the meeting. Odisha’s rich cultural landscape, including UNESCO-recognised heritage sites and emerging destinations such as Ranipur-Jharial and Harishankar, were discussed as potential drivers of sustainable tourism. The state reiterated its commitment to preserving tribal heritage while promoting global tourism.
Shared Vision for Sustainable Development Goals
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Both the United Nations and the Odisha government agreed to work together on inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and long-term development planning.
