The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) have resumed their demolition drive along Ekamra Kanan road in Bhubaneswar.

The eviction is part of the ongoing construction of a proposed 200-feet road project designed to ease traffic congestion in the area.

The operation on Hatiasuni road on Saturday, May 2, 2026, was conducted with a target to demolish 81 structures on-site. This adds to the more than 550 houses that have already been cleared as part of the project. The Works Minister had previously reviewed the progress, aiming to clear the entire stretch by April 30.

Administrative Support and Relocation

To ensure the process proceeds efficiently, four dedicated teams comprising officials from the BMC, BDA, and Commissionerate Police have been formed. Each team is responsible for clearing around 20 houses.

  • Support Services: The civic body has deployed heavy machinery for demolition and arranged transport vehicles to assist displaced families with the shifting of their belongings.
  • Workforce: Police personnel are stationed at the site to maintain law and order during the drive.

Resident Concerns and Allegations

While the drive aims to improve urban infrastructure, it has met with mixed reactions from affected residents, with several individuals raising concerns regarding the allotment of alternative housing:

  • Irregularity Allegations: Some residents reported not receiving their keys to alternative housing despite the demolition of their homes.
  • Duplication Claims: Allegations have surfaced that multiple housing units were allotted to single families based on a single electricity bill, while others were left without accommodation.
  • Demand for Re-survey: Affected citizens have requested Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to conduct a fresh, transparent survey to address the discrepancies.

Project Objectives

  • Road Capacity: The project expands the thoroughfare to a 200-feet road.
  • Traffic Flow: The initiative aims to relieve congestion and improve connectivity in the Ekamra Kanan and Hatiasuni regions.
