A tragic accident occurred on the evening of April 30, 2026, when a state tourism department cruise boat carrying passengers overturned and sank in the backwaters of the Narmada River at Bargi Dam, located approximately 40 kilometers from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

The vessel, carrying around 30 to 45 passengers, was caught in a sudden, high-velocity storm with wind speeds surging to 60–70 kmph.

The capsize resulted in the loss of nine lives. The recovery effort, involving the Indian Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities, discovered harrowing scenes from the wreckage, including a mother and her three-year-old child found tightly embracing in the submerged vessel. Meanwhile, 22 people were successfully rescued.

Administrative Action and Official Probe

Following the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav immediately visited Jabalpur to meet with the affected families and inspect the accident site. Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devra and Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh, the Chief Minister assured full support to the grieving families.

Key administrative decisions made by the state government include:

  • Statewide Operations Halted: A complete and immediate ban on all cruise services across the state of Madhya Pradesh has been enforced.
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): The government is formulating strict SOPs for adventure and water sports to prevent future mishaps.
  • High-Level Investigation: A specialized probe committee has been constituted, comprising the Director General of Home Guards and Civil Defence, a state Secretary, and the Jabalpur Divisional Commissioner, to examine the root causes of the accident, potential safety protocol violations, and whether prior weather warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) were ignored.
  • Recognition of Bravery: The local rescue team members who helped pull passengers from the turbulent waters will be honored on Independence Day (August 15).

Survivor Testimonies and Negligence Allegations

Survivors and eyewitnesses have recounted scenes of extreme panic and accused the crew of serious safety lapses. Survivors reported that the vessel carried an inadequate number of life jackets, which were only distributed in the chaotic final minutes as the vessel began to sink.

According to eyewitnesses, strong winds had made the water choppy, but requests from passengers to turn the cruise boat back to the embankment were allegedly ignored by the crew. As the vessel took on water, passengers were instructed to move to the lower deck, which became a death trap for many as the boat overturned in less than three minutes.

Financial Compensation

The Madhya Pradesh state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each to the bereaved families from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
