EVM tampering probe Falta

The Election Commission has ordered an investigation into alleged EVM tampering in Falta, South 24 Parganas, after videos surfaced showing tape placed next to the BJP and CPM candidates’ names.

The incident occurred in the constituency where Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan, an aide of Abhishek Banerjee, is contesting.

BJP candidate Debangshu Panda accused the Trinamool Congress of obstructing voters from casting ballots in his favour. BJP IT chief Amit Malviya shared videos claiming that buttons corresponding to BJP and CPM candidates were taped in several booths, including numbers 144, 170, and 189.

The Election Commission described the complaint as “serious” and said a repoll would be ordered if tampering is confirmed. Officials reiterated that presiding officers must ensure all EVM buttons remain visible and free from tape, glue, or any substance that could affect voting secrecy.

The controversy follows tensions between Khan and police observer Ajay Pal Sharma, who earlier warned Khan not to interfere with polling. The fresh allegations have intensified political friction in Diamond Harbour, though voting continued peacefully.

In a separate incident, polling was briefly halted at Booth No. 35 in Monteswar, Purba Bardhaman, after a button on the EVM was found covered with cellophane tape. Officials are examining the machine and verifying the claims.

The Election Commission said any confirmed tampering would lead to criminal action and a repoll, reaffirming its commitment to free and fair elections.
