Royal Challengers Bengaluru delivered a textbook performance at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, dismantling Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets in Match 23 of IPL 2026.

The defending champions’ disciplined bowling unit set the tone early, bundling out LSG for a modest 146 before a measured chase sealed the deal with 29 balls remaining.

Winning the toss and opting to bowl first proved a masterstroke for RCB captain Rajat Patidar. On a surface offering variable bounce, the home side’s pacers hit the deck hard and maintained tight lines, never allowing LSG to build meaningful partnerships.

Rasikh Salam Dar was the standout performer with a sensational 4 for 24 in his four overs, repeatedly breaking partnerships with clever variations. Bhuvneshwar Kumar brought his trademark experience into play, claiming 3 for 27, while Josh Hazlewood returned to form with a miserly 1 for 20. The bowling group operated as a cohesive unit, with Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma providing effective support in the middle overs.

Mitchell Marsh top-scored for LSG with a gritty 40 off 32 balls, while Ayush Badoni (38) and Mukul Choudhary (39) offered brief resistance. However, LSG struggled at a run rate of just 7.30, losing wickets at regular intervals after a promising start.

Post-match, Hazlewood, named Player of the Match, reflected on his comeback: “It has been a long road over the last few months, but I feel the rust came off in the game against Rajasthan, and today my rhythm felt much better… I focused on hammering that testing length and letting the wicket do the work.” He praised the collective bowling effort and spoke about the constant evolution of his craft, including work on slower balls.

Captain Rajat Patidar was delighted with the all-round display: “It was fantastic to watch the bowling performance… Having experienced bowlers like Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar makes the captain’s job much easier.” He highlighted the courage of Krunal Pandya and the consistency of Suyash Sharma.

Stand-in skipper Nicholas Pooran remained optimistic despite the defeat: “We felt anything around 175 would have been competitive, but they have a very strong batting lineup… It is only a matter of time before things turn around.” He acknowledged the character being tested in a tough season for LSG.

In the chase, RCB lost an early wicket but found stability through Virat Kohli’s composed 49 off 34 balls, featuring six crisp boundaries. Rajat Patidar injected momentum with a quick 27 off 13, while Jitesh Sharma’s explosive 23 off just nine deliveries shifted the game decisively. Tim David and Romario Shepherd then calmly finished the job as the target was reached without much drama.

The victory keeps RCB unbeaten at home and propels them to the top of the IPL 2026 standings, reinforcing their status as strong title contenders. For LSG, it marks another challenging night, but Pooran’s message of resilience suggests the fight is far from over.

With the tournament heating up, RCB’s balanced squad and home dominance make them a team to watch, while LSG will look to bounce back by capitalising on their batting firepower in upcoming fixtures.
