A Plus-III girl student died at MKCG Medical College and Hospital after setting herself ablaze in Bhetanai village under Kotinada police limits, Ganjam district.

The student reportedly poured kerosene on herself and ignited the flames. Locals rushed her to Aska hospital, and doctors later shifted her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital. She suffered severe burns on more than 60% of her body, including her face and neck. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on April 28.

Police officers began investigating the case to determine the exact cause of the incident. Preliminary reports suggested a possible link to a love affair. Authorities are recording statements from family members and villagers to establish the sequence of events.

The tragic death has sparked concern in the community. Residents expressed shock and grief, while officials emphasised the importance of counselling and awareness among young students. The incident highlights the need for stronger emotional support systems in rural areas.

The police investigation continues, and officials aim to uncover the circumstances that led to the self-immolation. The case underscores the urgency of addressing mental health and relationship challenges among youth.
