The Odisha government is preparing a permanent solution for street vendors under the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), with plans to construct a vending zone near Kapil Prasad BDA Chhak.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra informed the Assembly about the initiative while responding to a query from MLA Babu Singh.
The minister said that 42 street vendors have been identified on Rath Road, with 54 pindis already built for their rehabilitation on Vivekananda Marg. However, legal complications have delayed the process. In Forest Park, seven vendors have been successfully rehabilitated, while those in Nuagaon are awaiting survey and relocation.
Mahapatra added that the BMC will conduct a survey to identify vendors in Nuagaon and shift them to a nearby vending zone. The move aims to provide relief to vendors while addressing concerns of the municipal corporation regarding unregulated vending.
The government’s plan is expected to streamline street vending activities, reduce congestion, and ensure vendors have a designated space to operate.
