Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik marked Pakhala Diwas by sculpting a stunning Pakhala-themed sand art on Puri beach, celebrating Odisha’s most loved summer delicacy.
Pattnaik shared his creation on social media, expressing his affection for Pakhala, a fermented rice dish cherished across Odisha. He described the day as a tribute to the state’s culinary heritage. His artwork drew attention from locals and tourists, reinforcing the cultural importance of the dish.
Pakhala holds a special place in Odia households. Families prepare it daily during the summer for its cooling properties. The dish symbolises simplicity, affordability, and tradition. Patnaik’s sand art highlighted this cultural bond, turning the beach into a canvas of Odia pride.
Pakhala gained national recognition when former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik hosted eminent leaders, including former President Pranab Mukherjee and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, at Naveen Niwas, serving them the dish. That moment elevated Pakhala from a regional staple to a symbol of Odia identity.
