The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in five states and one union territory on Sunday.
The poll body has scheduled a press conference at 4 PM where officials will unveil the complete timeline for elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and the union territory of Puducherry.
The announcement will include details such as polling phases, nomination dates, and vote counting schedules.
Assembly Terms Set to End Soon
The terms of the legislative assemblies in these regions are scheduled to end between May and June, making it necessary for fresh elections to be conducted before the constitutional deadline.
In preparation for the polls, authorities have already completed the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The final voter lists for all the poll-bound states and the union territory have also been published.
Election Commission Conducted Ground Review
Earlier this week, the Election Commission held an important meeting in New Delhi to finalise the election timetable and determine the phase-wise polling plan.
The full bench of the Commission, led by Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, recently completed a multi-state review of poll preparedness.
Officials assessed security arrangements, logistical requirements, and administrative readiness across the regions before returning to the national capital earlier this week.
Key Political Contest Ahead
The Assembly elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry are expected to be closely watched political contests, as major national and regional parties prepare to campaign across these states.
With the official election schedule expected later today, political parties are likely to intensify campaign activities and candidate announcements in the coming weeks.
