A shocking incident unfolded in Rayagada on Sunday when a woman attempted suicide by consuming phenyl and setting herself ablaze near the Majhighariani temple.
The victim, identified as Subhadra Majhi of Indiranagar, was rescued in critical condition and admitted to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital.
Witnesses said the woman first drank phenyl before igniting herself. Temple staff rushed to her aid and managed to extinguish the flames before shifting her to the hospital. Doctors confirmed that parts of her body sustained severe burns.
Police from the Rayagada Town station reached the spot and began an investigation. Officers are probing the circumstances behind the attempt, as the reasons remain unclear. Authorities said they will examine her personal and professional background to determine possible triggers.
Subhadra worked as a data entry operator at the RMC office. Locals expressed shock over the incident, which occurred on International Women’s Day, a time when the nation was celebrating women’s empowerment.
