The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced strict measures to protect workers and residents as temperatures continue to rise in the capital city.

Starting March 15, all outdoor construction activities will remain suspended between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to safeguard labourers from extreme heat conditions.

Officials said temperatures have already touched 32 to 36 degrees Celsius, prompting urgent action. The directive aims to reduce health risks for workers exposed to direct sunlight during peak hours.

In addition to halting construction, BMC will set up drinking water kiosks at key locations to assist the public, street vendors, homeless individuals, and vulnerable groups. Water pots will also be placed for stray animals across the city.

To strengthen the heatwave response, a 24-hour control room has been activated. The toll-free helpline number 1929, previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been reintroduced. Citizens can use the helpline to report heat-related illnesses, seek assistance, and receive guidance on precautions against sunstroke.

Additional Commissioner I Ratnakar Sahu stated that these measures will provide immediate relief to people spending long hours outdoors, including travellers, hawkers, and the homeless. He urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines during the heatwave.
