In a bid to demystify India’s overhauled criminal justice system for the public, the Odisha Police has launched the “Nyaya Sanhita Exhibition” in Bhubaneswar.

This interactive showcase highlights the three transformative laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—that replaced colonial-era codes on July 1, 2024, shifting the focus from punishment to justice and victim rights.

The exhibition, set up at the Exhibition Ground in Unit-III, will be inaugurated on March 6 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as the chief guest.

Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania announced the details at a press conference held at Police Seva Bhawan today, emphasising the event’s role in educating citizens about the modernised legal framework.

“This is a historic shift from a colonial punitive system to one centred on justice, where victims’ dignity and timely resolutions take precedence,” said DGP Khurania. He highlighted how the new laws incorporate the adage “justice delayed is justice denied” by mandating efficient investigations and trials.

Open to the public from March 7 to 10, the exhibition offers an immersive journey through 10 stalls, tracing the judicial process “From Crime Scene to High Court.” Visitors can explore cutting-edge technologies like e-Sakshya for digital evidence, the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) for biometrics, and mobile forensic units for real-time crime scene analysis. Mandatory forensic probes for serious offenses are also featured, underscoring the emphasis on scientific policing.

The stalls cover key operational areas, including emergency response via the 112 helpline, police station protocols, hospital integrations, forensic labs, public prosecution, district courts, prisons, and high court proceedings. Specialised sections spotlight the Special Operations Group (SOG) in combating Maoist threats, the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) in disaster management, and initiatives for police modernisation, women’s safety, and crime prevention.

DGP Khurania reiterated the Odisha Police’s commitment to leveraging technology and community involvement for swift justice. The press conference was attended by senior officials, including DGP (Crime Branch) Binaytosh Mishra and ADGP (Railways and Coastal Security) Arun Bothra.

This exhibition not only promotes transparency but also builds public trust in the evolving justice system, aligning with national efforts to make law enforcement more accessible and victim-oriented.
