Amid escalating violence in parts of Mexico following a major anti-cartel military operation, India has issued a safety advisory for its citizens residing in or traveling across affected regions.

In an official statement, the Embassy of India, Mexico City urged Indian nationals to seek shelter and avoid large gatherings until further notice.

The advisory follows widespread unrest triggered by the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a military operation in Jalisco state.

Areas under heightened alert

The Indian Embassy has specifically advised nationals to exercise extreme caution in the following regions:

  • Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara in Jalisco State

  • Reynosa and other municipalities in Tamaulipas State

  • Parts of Michoacán State

  • Guerrero State

  • Nuevo León State

Officials noted ongoing security operations, road blockages, and reports of criminal activity in these areas.

Checklist for Indian nationals in Mexico

The Embassy has released a clear safety checklist to help Indian citizens remain safe:

  • Avoid areas where law enforcement operations are underway

  • Stay aware of your surroundings at all times

  • Shelter in place and limit unnecessary movement

  • Monitor local news and official updates

  • Follow directions issued by local authorities

  • Call 911 in case of emergency

  • Avoid public gatherings and crowded spaces

  • Stay in contact with family and friends via phone or social media

Indian nationals requiring assistance may contact the Embassy at +52 55 4847 7539.

International advisories also issued

India joins other countries in issuing travel and safety guidance. The United States and Canada have also advised their citizens to exercise caution, shelter in place where necessary, and avoid non-essential movement in affected areas.

The violence follows the reported death of El Mencho during a confrontation with Mexican security forces. Mexico’s Defense Ministry confirmed that he was seriously injured in Jalisco and died during an airlift to Mexico City.

The CJNG has long been regarded as one of Mexico’s most powerful and aggressive criminal organizations. According to US authorities, it rivals the Sinaloa Cartel in operational reach and influence.

Situation remains fluid

Security operations remain ongoing across several Mexican states. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain indoors, stay informed through verified sources, and prioritize personal safety.

The Embassy has assured the Indian community that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as needed.
