Argentina Thrash India 8-0 in Record-Breaking FIH Pro League Rout at Rourkela

The Indian men’s hockey team was ruthlessly dismantled 8-0 by Argentina at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium on Thursday.

The defeat not only handed India a second straight loss in their 2025-26 FIH Pro League home leg but also marked Argentina’s biggest-ever victory in the seven-year history of the competition.

Argentina came out firing from the first whistle. By half-time, the score was already 0-7, with the visitors exploiting every defensive lapse and capitalising on multiple penalty corners. The second half brought one more goal to complete the rout, leaving a stunned capacity crowd in Rourkela in silence.

The result comes just 24 hours after India went down 1-3 to world champions Belgium in the opening match of the home leg. Two heavy defeats in two days at home have suddenly piled enormous pressure on captain Harmanpreet Singh’s side, who are now staring at a crisis of confidence barely two years before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Argentina, which had lost 3-5 to Belgium earlier in the week, produced a clinical performance that will send shockwaves through the hockey world. Forward Tomás Domene, already the second-highest scorer in the league this season with six goals before this match, was once again a constant threat.

For India, the defensive frailties that were exposed against Belgium were magnified tenfold. The midfield struggled to contain Argentina’s pace and movement, while the backline was repeatedly breached on set-pieces. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh (or his replacement) faced an onslaught that no keeper could have saved single-handedly.

This is the heaviest defeat for India in the FIH Pro League era and the worst home loss in recent memory. Fans on social media were quick to voice their frustration, with many calling for a complete review of the team’s preparation and coaching staff.

India still has two more matches in Rourkela — against Belgium and Argentina again — before the league moves to Europe. The next fixture against Belgium on Saturday now assumes massive importance; anything less than a convincing response could trigger even louder questions about the team’s direction.

Argentina, on the other hand, have announced themselves as serious title contenders once again. After an opening loss to Belgium, they have bounced back in spectacular fashion on Indian soil.
