In a stirring address, Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, promised to relentlessly pursue loyalists of the former regime led by Bashar al-Assad.

This declaration comes in the wake of one of the deadliest outbreaks of violence the country has seen since Assad’s ousting.

The violence, which erupted over the weekend, has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,300 individuals, including 830 civilians. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the clashes primarily targeted Alawite communities along Syria’s west coast.

Addressing the nation through televised and social media broadcasts, al-Sharaa, who leads the rebel group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), decried the actions of Assad loyalists. “We will hold accountable, firmly and without leniency, anyone involved in the bloodshed of civilians,” he stated emphatically.

The conflict ignited on Thursday following an ambush on government forces, quickly escalating into full-scale warfare between Assad loyalists and government troops. In addition to civilian casualties, the skirmishes claimed the lives of 231 security personnel and 250 pro-Assad fighters, bringing the total death toll to 1,311.

Al-Sharaa accused remnants of the former regime and their foreign supporters of attempting to destabilize Syria by inciting new strife. He vowed to counter these efforts and safeguard the unity and stability of the nation.

As the crisis continues to unfold, international observers and humanitarian organizations are closely monitoring the situation, calling for immediate measures to protect civilians and restore peace.
