In a bid to revitalise the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) following its setback in the 2024 assembly elections, party president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik convened a crucial meeting with leaders from Ganjam district at his residence, Naveen Niwas, on Wednesday.
The gathering focused on sharpening the party’s ground-level strategy, addressing persistent farmers’ grievances, and gearing up for the upcoming municipal and panchayat elections in the state.
Patnaik, known for his long-standing dominance in Odisha politics, underscored the urgency of bolstering the BJD’s grassroots presence. “We must strengthen the party at the grassroots level and ensure immediate, coordinated preparations across the district,” he reportedly told the attendees, according to party sources. The emphasis was on intensifying outreach efforts, mobilizing supporters, and enhancing booth-level operations to secure a strong footing in the polls.
The elections are set to commence with voting in seven Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) among the newly notified municipal councils in Ganjam district. These urban polls, expected to be completed by June 2026 as per the State Election Commission’s timeline, will be followed by the broader panchayat elections across Odisha. Ganjam, a traditional BJD stronghold in southern Odisha, holds significant importance for the party as it seeks to reclaim rural and semi-urban voter bases lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the previous state assembly contest.
A key highlight of the meeting was the discussion on farmers’ issues, particularly reports of harassment at local mandis (markets). District leaders apprised Patnaik of these challenges, expressing gratitude for his ongoing advocacy on the matter. They also highlighted robust backing from Ganjam farmers for the party’s proposed solutions, signaling potential leverage in agrarian-dominated constituencies.
The session saw participation from prominent BJD figures, including Ganjam Working Presidents Purnachandra Swain and Bhagaban Gantayat, senior leader Chandrasekhar Sahu, Brahmapur Mayor Sanghamitra Dalei, Bhrigu Buxipatra, Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik, Shrikant Sahu, Ranjita Sahu, and representatives from all 13 assembly segments in the district. The unified front displayed during the meeting reflects the BJD’s determination to mount a comeback amid evolving political dynamics in Odisha.
This strategic huddle comes at a time when the BJD is navigating post-election recovery, with Patnaik’s leadership continuing to anchor the party’s revival efforts. As the dual elections approach, the focus on Ganjam could set the tone for the opposition’s challenge against the ruling BJP government.
