The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is preparing to launch a new mobile application that will allow subscribers to withdraw provident fund balances instantly using UPI.

Government sources confirmed that the Labour Ministry is working on the system for release in April 2026.

The new facility will enable members to withdraw up to 75 per cent of their EPF balance in real time. The service will be available through the upcoming mobile app and a dedicated window on the EPFO portal. Transactions will be authenticated using the subscriber’s UPI PIN, ensuring instant settlement through the UPI payment gateway.

Currently, EPF rules allow subscribers to withdraw up to 75 per cent of their balance immediately. Full withdrawal of 100 per cent is permitted only if a member remains unemployed for one year. For complete pension fund withdrawal, members must select a reason such as illness, education, marriage, or housing. The eligible amount is then transferred directly to the linked savings bank account.

EPFO is testing the new system with 100 dummy accounts to identify technical glitches and improve stability before public rollout. Existing platforms like the UAN portal and UMANG app will continue to operate, while the new app will supplement them.

Besides withdrawals, the app will also provide access to EPF passbook balances and other account-related services. Officials believe the UPI-based withdrawal feature will modernise fund access and improve convenience for millions of subscribers.
