The artificial intelligence (AI) sector in India is poised to exceed 2.3 million job openings by 2027, according to a recent report.

The study conducted by Bain & Company emphasizes that reskilling and upskilling existing talent is crucial to meet the growing demand for AI professionals in the country.

The report highlights that India’s AI talent pool is expected to grow to around 1.2 million, presenting an opportunity to reskill over 1 million workers. Saikat Banerjee, a partner at Bain & Company, underscored the need for businesses to shift their approach to attracting, developing, and retaining AI talent. He stated that addressing the AI talent shortage requires a fundamental change in how companies approach hiring and fostering an innovation-driven ecosystem.

Globally, AI-related job postings have surged by 21% annually since 2019, but the number of qualified candidates has not kept pace. This talent gap is expected to persist through at least 2027, with its impact varying across different markets. The United States, Germany, the UK, and Australia are all expected to face substantial AI job shortfalls by 2027.

The report calls for a concerted effort to reskill and upskill workers to bridge the talent gap and ensure that India can position itself as a global AI talent hub.
