The controversy surrounding the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 continues to escalate, with former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif claiming that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is “panicked” following Pakistan’s decision to boycott its high-profile group match against India.
On Sunday, the Government of Pakistan announced that the national team would participate in the 20-team tournament but would not take the field against India in their scheduled clash on February 15 in Colombo. The decision has added to the mounting tensions surrounding the tournament, which begins in less than a week.
Pakistan’s Decision Linked to Bangladesh Row
While no official reason was cited, the boycott is widely believed to be an expression of solidarity with Bangladesh, who were recently removed from the tournament after refusing to travel to India over security concerns. The ICC replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in Group C, a move that drew sharp criticism from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated earlier that Bangladesh had been treated “unfairly,” a sentiment echoed by several figures in Pakistan cricket.
ICC Warns of Consequences
In response to Pakistan’s announcement, the ICC issued a statement warning of serious consequences should the PCB refuse to reconsider its stance. The rapid response from the governing body has become a focal point of debate.
Speaking to Hindustan Times Digital, Rashid Latif argued that the ICC’s swift action reflected anxiety rather than authority.
“Generally, the ICC doesn’t react this quickly. The fact that they issued a statement on a Sunday shows they are clearly panicking,” Latif said, adding that Pakistan’s move directly challenges the ICC rather than India or the BCCI.
‘No Equality in World Cricket’
Latif also highlighted long-standing concerns over revenue distribution and influence within international cricket, claiming that Pakistan receives a disproportionately small share compared to other major boards.
“There is no equality. Pakistan has suffered losses for years, while other boards earn significantly more. This decision could change power dynamics,” he said, adding that sanctions would hurt the ICC financially more than Pakistan.
Broadcasters and Commercial Impact
India–Pakistan matches are considered the biggest commercial drivers in world cricket, and the boycott could have a significant impact on broadcasters and sponsors.
According to Latif, any withdrawal by broadcasters would place the financial burden squarely on the ICC. “If Pakistan doesn’t play, everyone is affected — especially the ICC,” he said.
Scope for Talks, But No U-Turn Expected
While Latif does not foresee Pakistan reversing its decision, he believes negotiations remain possible.
“All stakeholders should sit at the same table and talk. If Pakistan and Bangladesh step away, both the ICC and ACC will be affected,” he said, pointing to the massive fan base across South Asia that underpins global cricket revenues.
Support for Mohsin Naqvi’s Leadership
Despite being a past critic of PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Latif praised his role in the current decision, calling it a turning point for Pakistan cricket administration.
“This was a necessary call. Naqvi has the authority and political backing to take such decisions. This will strengthen his position in Pakistan and world cricket,” Latif said.
He added that other cricket boards may now be compelled to support Pakistan’s stance during upcoming ICC meetings.
