Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on Wednesday announced that the expansion of Rourkela Airport and the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) will be taken up in the near future as part of a comprehensive development plan for the region.
During his visit to Rourkela, the Chief Minister said that both the State and Central Governments are working in close coordination to ensure timely execution of the proposed projects. The initiatives aim to strengthen infrastructure, improve connectivity, and promote industrial growth in and around the city.
Task Force Formed, Centre-State Coordination in Progress
CM Majhi noted that residents of Rourkela have long demanded a larger airport and the expansion of the steel plant. After the formation of the new government, discussions were held with senior officials of the Rourkela Steel Plant and concerned Central Government authorities to move the projects forward.
He informed that officials from the Centre have conducted detailed inspections of the steel plant, followed by review meetings held in Bhubaneswar in the presence of senior state leaders. A dedicated task force has been formed, and teams under Development Commissioner Deo Ranjan Singh have visited the site multiple times. According to the Chief Minister, deliberations are progressing positively.
Rourkela Airport to Be Upgraded to Category-C
As part of the aviation development plan, the Rourkela Airport is proposed to be upgraded to Category-C, which will significantly enhance air connectivity and support regional economic activities. The upgrade is expected to benefit business travelers, industries, and the general public alike.
Expansion of Rourkela Steel Plant on Development Agenda
In addition to aviation infrastructure, the Chief Minister emphasized that the Rourkela Steel Plant will also undergo expansion and modernization. He reiterated that both levels of government are committed to accelerating industrial development while ensuring sustainable growth.
The announcements highlight the government’s focus on integrated regional development, combining infrastructure upgrades with industrial expansion to support long-term economic progress in Rourkela and western Odisha.
