Italy scripted history in Dubai by defeating Ireland in the third T20I to record their first-ever victory over a Test-playing nation.
The Azzurri chased down 155 with four wickets in hand, thanks to Grant Stewart’s explosive finish.
Italy, ranked 28th in the ICC T20I standings, stunned 11th-ranked Ireland as Stewart smashed three consecutive sixes in the final over to seal the win with three balls to spare. He remained unbeaten on 33 off 19 balls, while skipper Wayne Madsen top-scored with 39.
Ireland, led by Paul Stirling, posted 154 after being asked to bat. Stirling struck 45, but Italy’s Crishan Kalugamage starred with the ball, taking 3/28. Stewart and JJ Smuts chipped in with two wickets each.
Although Ireland clinched the series 2-1, Italy’s triumph marked a watershed moment in their cricketing journey. The victory comes just ahead of their debut appearance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, beginning February 7 in India and Sri Lanka.
Italy will compete in Group C alongside England, the West Indies, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Their campaign starts against Bangladesh on February 9 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
