Simran Bala, a 26-year-old Assistant Commandant from Nowshera in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, will make history on Republic Day.

She will lead an all-male marching contingent of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Kartavya Path, New Delhi.

This marks the first time a woman officer will command more than 140 male personnel at the national ceremony, setting a milestone in India’s security forces.

Trailblazing journey

Bala became the first woman from her district to join the CRPF officer ranks after she cleared the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) examination. She sharpened her leadership skills during rigorous training at the CRPF Academy. Moreover, she has already served in operational deployments across challenging terrains, proving her capability in real-world scenarios.

Symbol of inclusivity

Her appointment highlights the growing emphasis on gender inclusivity and merit-based recognition within India’s paramilitary forces. In fact, officials noted that Bala’s role at the parade underscores the evolving opportunities for women in uniform. Consequently, her achievement sets a strong precedent for future leadership roles.

Republic Day significance

The Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path stands as one of India’s most prestigious national events. It showcases the strength and diversity of the armed and paramilitary forces. Against this backdrop, Bala’s leadership of the CRPF contingent will be a historic moment. Furthermore, her presence will inspire young women across the country to pursue careers in defence and security.
