Odisha has introduced a groundbreaking security measure by installing AI-powered cameras in its prisons for the first time in the state.

The advanced system detects narcotics or suspicious objects thrown over jail walls and monitors inmate activities in real time.

The pilot project at Dhenkanal District Jail proved successful, prompting authorities to expand the initiative.

In the first phase, authorities plan to equip 18 jails with these cameras, installing 16 units per facility. The AI system creates virtual “imaginary lines” around sensitive areas. Crossing these lines, unusual movements, or attempts to throw items in or out trigger immediate buzzer alerts, enabling swift response from jail staff.

This technology prevents prisoner escapes, detects suspicious behaviour among inmates, and curbs contraband entry, including drugs.

DIG Prisons Biren Sahu shared details with the media: “The system has been implemented as per the Director General’s instructions. Testing showed it effectively alerts authorities to wall breaches or object throwing. After Dhenkanal’s success, we have directed installation in the remaining 17 jails.”

The second phase targets four larger circle jails:

  • Jharpada (Bhubaneswar)
  • Choudwar
  • Sambalpur
  • Berhampur

Each will receive 32 AI cameras for comprehensive coverage.

This AI-driven upgrade marks a major leap in prison management in Odisha, enhancing safety for staff and inmates while addressing longstanding security challenges.
