Two prisoners escaped from Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack, Odisha, creating a storm of allegations between senior jail officials and triggering police investigations into serious misconduct.
Former jailer Santoshini Dash, now posted at Kantabanji Sub-Jail, filed a complaint against Jail Superintendent Sujit Kumar Roul. She accused him of tampering with jail records between October 1 and 3, 2025. Dash claimed Roul altered registers to show his presence inside the jail even though he had officially marked his absence on October 2 for personal work in Khordha. Police recorded her statement and began examining documents related to the case.
Roul rejected the allegations and accused Dash of negligence during Dussehra celebrations. He alleged that Dash allowed two inmates, Raja Sahani and Madhukant Kumar, to move freely outside their cells, which enabled their escape on October 3. He also filed a counter-complaint accusing Dash of financial irregularities in the jail canteen and dereliction of duty.
Police registered both cases and started parallel investigations. Authorities seized CCTV footage covering the escape and the preceding days to verify claims. The escape of the two Bihar-based criminals has kept Choudwar jail under intense scrutiny.
The incident highlights deep divisions within the jail administration. Allegations of forgery, negligence, and financial misconduct have intensified the controversy. With fugitives still at large, the Choudwar Prison Escape continues to raise questions about accountability and security inside Odisha’s correctional facilities.
