Doraemon Disappears from Indonesian TV After Three Decades, Marking the End of a Childhood Era

For generations of Indonesian viewers, Sunday mornings were inseparable from the cheerful presence of a blue robotic cat. That long-standing tradition has now come to an unexpected end. After more than 30 years on air, the beloved Japanese anime Doraemon is no longer being broadcast on Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia (RCTI), closing a chapter that defined childhood for millions across the country.

The iconic series, which follows a robot cat from the 22nd century helping the well-meaning but accident-prone Nobita Nobi, has been absent from RCTI’s programming schedule since late 2025. Its sudden disappearance has sparked widespread disappointment and confusion among viewers, many of whom have taken to social media to demand answers.

As of Sunday, January 4, 2026, RCTI has yet to issue an official statement clarifying why Doraemon was removed from its line-up. In the absence of an explanation, the broadcaster’s social media accounts have been inundated with comments from loyal fans who say the anime was the primary reason they tuned in every week.

On Instagram, viewers repeatedly called for the show’s return. Comments such as “Please re-air Doraemon on RCTI,” and “Since Doraemon stopped airing, RCTI isn’t exciting anymore,” reflect the depth of nostalgia associated with the series. Another user wrote, “I only watch RCTI for Doraemon. Please bring it back,” echoing the sentiments of thousands of longtime fans.

Fueling speculation further, the verified Instagram account Catatan Film shared insights based on broadcast data. According to the post, Doraemon was missing from RCTI’s schedule on the RCTI+ platform between December 29, 2025, and January 4, 2026. The account also noted that Doraemon feature films had become increasingly rare on the channel in recent months.

First introduced to Indonesian television in the early 1990s, Doraemon quickly evolved into a cultural staple. For many families, Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. were synonymous with Nobita’s misadventures and Doraemon’s futuristic gadgets—stories that subtly conveyed lessons about friendship, responsibility, empathy, and perseverance.

The anime’s removal has since prompted broader conversations across digital platforms. On X (formerly Twitter), the account @indoPopBase reported that Doraemon had officially ended its nearly four-decade run on RCTI, a statement that resonated deeply with viewers who grew up alongside the series.

Originally airing in Japan on TV Asahi in 1979, Doraemon has undergone several adaptations over the decades. Its unique blend of science fiction, humour, and relatable life lessons has enabled the franchise to transcend age and geography, solidifying its place as more than just a children’s cartoon in Indonesia.
