Cattle smuggling in tourist bus

In a bizarre incident highlighting the evolving tactics of cattle smugglers, a tourist bus disguised as a passenger vehicle crashed while allegedly being used to transport cows illegally.

The accident occurred on Monday evening at the Bada Barasingh intersection in Badamba block, exposing what authorities believe to be a sophisticated smuggling operation.

The bus, bearing the registration number OD 06 J 7975, was travelling at high speed and recklessly when it lost balance and collided. Badamba police quickly responded, seizing the vehicle for investigation. Upon inspection, officers discovered that the interior had no seats and was instead elaborately decorated, with numerous ropes and ties typically used for securing cattle. This setup raised immediate suspicions of cattle smuggling, as the bus appeared modified specifically for transporting animals rather than passengers.

Initial probes revealed discrepancies in the vehicle’s ownership. While the registration documents were in one individual’s name, further checks indicated that the bus actually belonged to someone else. “The vehicle was seized, and a case has been registered,” a Badamba police official stated. Investigations are ongoing to determine the bus’s origin, the source of the cattle, and the intended destination for the smuggling activity.

This incident underscores the growing ingenuity of cattle smugglers in Odisha, who are increasingly using unconventional methods like repurposing tourist buses to evade detection.

Local residents expressed shock at the revelation, with one eyewitness describing the bus as “looking perfectly normal from the outside, but clearly rigged for something illegal inside.” The crash resulted in no reported injuries, but it has sparked discussions on enhancing vehicle inspections and border checks to curb interstate cattle trafficking.
