Several workers are feared dead after a massive rock collapse triggered by an explosion at a stone quarry in Dhenkanal district, Odisha, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The incident occurred Saturday evening at a quarry near Gopalpur village, falling under the jurisdiction of Motanga police station. Workers were reportedly engaged in drilling and stone extraction when a large section of rocks gave way, trapping several under the debris, according to PTI. The exact number of trapped workers is not yet confirmed.

Rescue efforts are currently underway, with teams from the local fire service, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and a dog squad deployed to the site. Heavy machinery is being used to remove debris and locate survivors.

Dhenkanal Collector Ashish Ishwar Patil and Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar have reached the quarry to oversee rescue operations.

Expressing his condolences, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik wrote on X:
“I am deeply saddened to learn that workers lost their lives due to a rockfall following an explosion in a stone quarry in Dhenkanal. My deepest condolences to the family members, along with prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls. Appropriate investigations must be conducted to ensure workers’ safety, and rescue operations should be expedited immediately.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion and safety protocols at the quarry.
