At least 18 people, including four women, have been arrested in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district in connection with the killing of a couple who were allegedly targeted on suspicion of practising witchcraft, police said on Friday.

According to officials, the incident took place on December 30, 2025, in Beloguri Munda village under the Howraghat area. The victims were accused by some villagers of causing illness and misfortune in the locality through alleged witchcraft practices. Police said the couple was attacked inside their home, leading to their deaths.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Senior Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh said the arrests followed a sustained investigation and examination of video footage and witness accounts.

“We have identified the accused and arrested 18 people so far. Further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses,” Singh said.

Police have registered a suo motu case under the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act, which classifies witch-hunting as a cognisable and non-bailable offence. Relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103 related to murder, have also been invoked.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials said the crime appeared to involve collective participation, making it challenging to determine individual roles at this stage. Senior police officers and district administration officials have visited the village, and residents are being questioned to establish responsibility and motive.

Concern Over Superstition

District authorities noted that the case highlights the continued presence of deep-rooted superstitious beliefs in parts of the region despite strict laws and awareness efforts. Officials said community outreach and education drives would be intensified to prevent such incidents in the future.
