Morocco stormed into the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Zambia 3-0 in Rabat.
Ayoub El Kaabi struck twice, while Brahim Diaz netted his third goal of the tournament to seal a convincing win.
El Kaabi opened the scoring with a powerful header in the ninth minute and later dazzled fans with a spectacular bicycle kick, confirmed onside after a VAR check. Diaz added Morocco’s second goal with a composed finish in the 27th minute, driving most of the team’s attacking play and becoming a standout performer.
The hosts, after a shaky start with a narrow win over Comoros and a draw against Mali, finally displayed the dominance expected of tournament favourites. Morocco finished Group A with seven points, ahead of Mali on three. Zambia exited the competition after finishing bottom with two points, behind Comoros on goal difference.
Morocco’s relentless attack kept Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza busy, forcing crucial saves within the opening minutes. However, he could not prevent El Kaabi’s decisive strikes.
Hakimi’s Return
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, recently crowned African Footballer of the Year, made a triumphant return from injury. He entered as a substitute in the 64th minute, receiving loud applause from the home crowd. Hakimi nearly scored in the 81st minute with a clever outside-foot shot, but Mwanza denied him with a full-stretch save.
Hakimi’s recovery, completed sooner than expected, drew praise from his coach for his dedication during rehabilitation. His presence strengthens Morocco’s campaign as they await their round of 16 opponent, one of the four best third-placed teams.
