Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a major relief for Odisha’s traditional artists by increasing their monthly allowance to Rs 3,000.

The decision brings joy to thousands of folk performers across the state and strengthens efforts to preserve Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.

The enhanced allowance will directly benefit artists engaged in folk traditions such as Chhau dance, Dhanu Yatra, Pala, Danda Nata, and other classical forms. Reports suggest the move will improve the financial stability of artists and inspire them to continue practising and promoting their art.

Earlier, many artists struggled with financial hardships due to the lower allowance. The increase now secures their livelihood and encourages them to pass on their traditions to younger generations. Cultural experts believe the decision will play a crucial role in safeguarding Odisha’s heritage while attracting new audiences to folk art.

The artist community welcomed the announcement wholeheartedly. Several performers described it as a “historic step” by the government, noting that it will help sustain their art forms and provide dignity to their profession.

The declaration has already sparked fresh enthusiasm in the cultural sector. Observers expect the move to energise festivals, performances, and community participation across Odisha.
