Mercury Falls Below 10°C in Ten Cities in Odisha

Odisha continues to reel under a cold wave as temperatures dipped sharply across several regions.


For the twelfth consecutive day, dry and chilly winds from the northwest have kept weather conditions stable, according to Dr Sanjeev Dwivedi of the Regional Meteorological Centre.

In the last 24 hours, ten cities recorded minimum temperatures below 10°C. Semiliguda in Koraput district reported the lowest at 3.9°C. Udayagiri followed with 5°C, Koraput at 6.4°C, Phulbani at 7.5°C, Daringbadi at 8°C, Jharsuguda at 8.2°C, Chipilima at 8.4°C, Kirei at 9.3°C, Nabarangpur at 9.8°C, and Sundargarh at 10°C. Six other cities recorded minimum temperatures between 10°C and 12°C. Meteorologists expect the mercury to dip further in the coming week.

Alongside the cold, dense fog has intensified in parts of the state. Sundargarh district’s Rourkela, Kandhamal’s Phulbani, and Kalahandi’s Bhawanipatna reported heavy fog during the past 24 hours. Authorities issued a two-day warning for dense fog, particularly in Kandhamal and Sundargarh districts, urging residents to exercise caution.

Despite the chill, daytime temperatures remained relatively high. Paralakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature at 30.8°C. Weather experts noted that no major changes are expected in the state’s overall conditions during the week.

Rainfall trends also stood out. Since October 1, Odisha has received 24% more rainfall than normal. Southern and northern districts recorded higher-than-average precipitation, Dr Dwivedi confirmed.

The combination of cold nights, foggy mornings, and above-normal rainfall has created unusual weather conditions across Odisha, leaving residents bracing for continued chill and reduced visibility in the days ahead.
