A massive accident on the Yamuna Expressway claimed 13 lives and injured 35 others after seven buses and three vehicles collided in dense fog early Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. near Milestone 127 in the Baldev police station area, where poor visibility severely reduced safe travel conditions.

Officials reported that multiple vehicles travelling from Agra towards Noida rammed into each other, sparking a fire that engulfed several buses. Consequently, fire tenders rushed to the spot as passengers scrambled to safety. Authorities also arranged government vehicles to transport stranded commuters and implemented temporary traffic diversions.

Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar confirmed that fog-related poor visibility was the likely cause of the pile-up. Moreover, Baldev Station House Officer Ranjana Sachan stated that only two victims have been identified so far: Akhilendra Pratap Yadav (44) of Prayagraj and Rampal (75) of Maharajganj. Both died after being trapped in the fire.

Police added that 15 injured victims were admitted to the district hospital, nine to the Baldev Community Health Centre, nine to a private hospital, and two to SN Medical College in Agra. Furthermore, post-mortem examinations are underway for the deceased.

Expressing grief, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the incident as “extremely tragic and heartbreaking.” He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. In addition, the Chief Minister’s Office announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased victim’s family and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Therefore, the accident highlights the dangers of heavy fog on highways and underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures during winter travel.
