The Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Monday apprehended Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Nanda Kishore Das of Jajpur Town Police Station red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a small betel shop owner.
The bribe was allegedly demanded by the ASI, who was the Investigating Officer of a land dispute case, to extend help to the complainant. Earlier, the ASI had demanded Rs 10,000, but later reduced it to Rs 5,000 after the complainant expressed an inability to pay the higher amount.
According to the Vigilance statement, the betel shop owner had approached the Orissa High Court for the demarcation of his land. Following court orders, the revenue authorities demarcated the plot in his favour. However, his neighbour allegedly demolished the newly constructed boundary wall, prompting the shop owner to file a complaint at Jajpur Town PS.
Instead of taking lawful action, ASI Nanda Kishore Das visited the spot and demanded a bribe to “help” the complainant in the case. When the poor shop owner failed to arrange ₹10,000, the officer settled for ₹5,000 and threatened dire consequences if the money was not paid.
Left with no option, the victim approached Odisha Vigilance. Acting swiftly, the anti-corruption team laid a trap and caught the ASI red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of ₹5,000. The entire bribe money has been recovered from his possession and seized.
Following the successful trap, simultaneous house searches are underway at three locations linked to the accused officer on the allegation of possession of disproportionate assets (DA).
In this connection, Cuttack Vigilance PS Case No. 34 dated 07.12.2025 has been registered against accused ASI Nanda Kishore Das under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Investigation is in progress.
