Rourkela Police arrested Rebe alias Sunil Majhi (41) near Sankha Bridge at Gopapali on Monday night after receiving a tip-off about his involvement in procuring and selling illegal firearms.

Acting swiftly on the information, a team from Brahmanitarang police station rushed to the spot around 9.40 pm. When Majhi saw the police, he tried to flee towards Biramitrapur, but officers caught him after a brief chase. During a personal search conducted in the presence of witnesses, police recovered a country-made pistol loaded with three live rounds from his waist.

During questioning, Majhi admitted that he sourced firearms and ammunition from Jharkhand and supplied them to buyers in Rourkela and Sundargarh. He also revealed that more weapons were hidden at his rented house in Chutiatola, Kuarmunda.

Consequently, police raided the house and seized:

  • One country-made pistol
  • Two single-shot firearms
  • A revolver with a wooden grip
  • 35 swords wrapped in a plastic sack

All items were recovered in the presence of witnesses and seized following proper procedure.

Furthermore, police described Majhi as a habitual offender with a long criminal history across Sundargarh and nearby districts. His past cases include charges under the Arms Act, robbery, dacoity, attempt to murder, and murder. Multiple police stations—Brahmanitarang, Lathikata, Biramitrapur, Barkote, Bonai, Chandiposh, Gurundia, Bisra, and Hatibari—have registered cases against him, some dating back more than a decade.
