Tension erupted at Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital on Saturday night after a newborn mother died allegedly due to medical negligence during post-delivery care.
The deceased has been identified as Pinki Sahu from Turumunga area. She was admitted to the maternity ward on Saturday morning after experiencing labour pain. A caesarean section was performed in the evening and she delivered a baby girl.
Family members allege that around midnight Pinki started complaining of severe pain. Although the attending nurse repeatedly tried to contact the doctor on duty, no doctor arrived. The nurse allegedly administered an injection on her own. By 2 am, Pinki was declared dead.
The family was handed a death certificate that reportedly lacked the doctor’s signature, raising further suspicion. Enraged relatives refused to take the body until the responsible doctor arrived and have staged a protest inside the hospital premises. A large police team has been deployed to control the situation and persuade the family.
The incident has triggered strong public anger over alleged negligence by hospital staff and the absence of doctors during critical hours.
