BCCI to Rohit Sharma: ‘Focus on Fitness and Performance’ as Closed-Door Review With Kohli Looms After South Africa ODIs

India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa may be crucial on the field, but an even more defining moment for Indian cricket could unfold immediately after the tour ends. Senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to face a closed-door review to determine their long-term roles in India’s ODI setup, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in sight.

BCCI Plans High-Level Review for Rohit and Kohli

According to a Times of India report, the BCCI is set to host a key meeting in Ahmedabad after the third ODI. The discussion will involve board officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with the objective of laying out a clear roadmap for the two senior players.

A board source quoted in the report said it was essential to give players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature absolute clarity regarding expectations and future plans. The source added that Rohit Sharma has already been advised to focus solely on his fitness and on-field performance, while avoiding any reaction to speculation about his future.

Concerns Over Rhythm and Match Practice

While there is respect for what Rohit and Kohli have contributed to Indian cricket, there is also a cricketing concern—lack of rhythm due to longer breaks between ODI appearances. With both players now featuring primarily in one format, they often return to the ODI squad after prolonged gaps.

Insiders pointed to the recent Australia ODI series. Although both batters contributed in the third match, the series had already been lost. Observers reportedly felt the pair looked rusty in the first two games, raising questions about consistency. “One can’t afford that in every series,” a board voice cautioned.

Rohit’s Batting Approach Under Discussion

Rohit Sharma’s batting style has also come under review. The team management still expects him to play the aggressive, high-tempo cricket that defined his performances during the Champions Trophy era. However, his recent outings suggested that he took longer to settle in and appeared to take fewer early risks.
The expectation remains for Rohit to continue setting the tone at the top with fearless intent.

Still Key Pillars of India’s ODI Batting Group

Despite these concerns, both Rohit and Kohli are considered essential to India’s ODI batting core, especially to guide and stabilize the younger batters around them. Their roles, insiders insist, extend beyond personal performance—they are expected to lead the batting group.

More Domestic Game Time on the Cards

To regain rhythm and match sharpness, the BCCI is likely to nudge both players toward increased participation in domestic cricket, particularly the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This would precede India’s home limited-overs series against New Zealand and a three-match ODI tour of England in July—India’s next significant 50-over assignment.

All Eyes on the Review Meeting

For now, the focus remains on the South Africa series. But the defining moment will likely occur afterwards, when two of India’s biggest modern-day stars sit down with selectors and team management to transparently discuss how long this celebrated ODI partnership can continue.
