Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda launched the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) 2.0 for 2025–29.

Nadda emphasised that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) directly threatens the effectiveness of surgical procedures, cancer treatments, and other critical interventions. He warned that the overuse and misuse of antibiotics has become common practice, which underscores the urgency of corrective measures. Moreover, he stressed that only collective action involving individuals, healthcare providers, and government institutions can contain AMR.

The new plan builds on the first NAP-AMR launched in 2017. It addresses gaps by strengthening inter-sectoral coordination, increasing private sector engagement, and enhancing ownership of AMR-related efforts. Furthermore, the plan outlines key strategies such as raising awareness, expanding education and training, boosting laboratory capacity, and improving infection control in healthcare facilities.

Nadda highlighted the importance of regular stakeholder meetings to resolve challenges promptly. He noted that several ministries have already undertaken initiatives, including bans on over-the-counter antibiotic sales in Kerala and Gujarat, and restrictions on certain antimicrobials and pesticides in agriculture.

Dr A K Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor, described NAP-AMR 2.0 as a timely initiative that coincides with the first day of WHO’s World AMR Awareness Week. He said India continues to act as a global pioneer in AMR containment. Additionally, he pointed to the India AMR Innovation Hub as a platform that mobilises resources, fosters innovation, and strengthens collaboration among stakeholders.

Senior officials from multiple ministries—including Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Environment, Science and Technology, AYUSH, Jal Shakti, and Education—attended the launch. All stakeholders reaffirmed their determination to implement NAP-AMR 2.0 and advance the One Health approach, integrating human, animal, agriculture, and environmental sectors.
