India captain Shubman Gill left the field due to injury during the opening session of Day 2 in the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The incident occurred shortly after he hit a boundary off Simon Harmer, following his arrival at the crease after Washington Sundar’s dismissal.

Gill appeared uncomfortable as soon as he completed the shot and held the back of his neck. The team physio assessed him on the field, but the captain soon walked off, retiring hurt and making way for Rishabh Pant.

Later in the session, the BCCI issued an official update stating that Gill is under the supervision of the medical team. His availability for the remainder of Day 2 will depend on how quickly he responds to treatment.

Gill’s workload has been a constant talking point since he took charge of the Test side. Over the past months, he has featured in a long sequence of matches, including five Tests against England, multi-format series against the West Indies and Australia, and the Asia Cup. He also stepped into the role of ODI captain after the West Indies tour.

India’s Position in the First Test

India began the day in control after dismissing South Africa for 159 in the first innings, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the attack through a five-wicket haul. A steady 57-run stand between KL Rahul and Washington Sundar positioned India well, but Sundar’s dismissal brought Gill to the crease.

Following Gill’s exit, South Africa capitalised by removing Rahul for 39 and Pant for 27. Pant’s knock included two sixes, which pushed him past Virender Sehwag to become the Indian with the most sixes in Test cricket.

India will be looking to rebuild their innings with stability while waiting for further updates on Gill’s condition.
