In a recent decision, the Odisha government has announced that March 5 will no longer be observed as a public holiday in the state.

Traditionally celebrated as the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, this day will now be a regular working day.

The change comes as the state aligns with the national observance of Panchayati Raj Day, celebrated on April 24 each year. This day marks the constitutionalization of Panchayati Raj through the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1993, which was a significant step towards decentralizing governance and empowering local self-government institutions.

Despite the change in the holiday status, March 5 will continue to be recognized and celebrated as the birth anniversary of Biju Patnaik. The government has assured that the legacy and contributions of the former Chief Minister will continue to be honored through various state-wide programs and events.

By shifting the holiday to April 24, the Odisha government aims to resolve any dissonance between state and national celebrations and ensure that the significance of both occasions is appropriately acknowledged.
