Odisha Vigilance officials apprehended a Morada Block staffer in Mayurbhanj district on Friday while he accepted a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a retired Panchayat official.
The arrest took place shortly after the complainant reported the matter to the vigilance authorities.
According to officials, Partha Sarathi Chel, Senior Revenue Assistant (SRA) of Morada Block, demanded money to process arrear salary dues of the complainant, who retired in February 2023. Despite repeated requests, Chel allegedly delayed the file and insisted on payment. The complainant then approached Vigilance, leading to a trap operation.
The Vigilance team caught Chel red-handed while he received the bribe inside his office. As soon as he noticed the officers, he attempted to dispose of the cash by throwing it into a dustbin. However, the team swiftly recovered the entire amount and seized it as evidence.
Following the arrest, Vigilance launched simultaneous searches at two of Chel’s properties to examine disproportionate assets. Officials confirmed that further investigation is underway.
In connection with the incident, Balasore Vigilance registered Case No.16/2025 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Authorities stated that a detailed report will follow.
The operation highlights Odisha Vigilance’s continued efforts to curb corruption in government offices. Residents of Morada Block expressed relief that action was taken against the accused, who allegedly exploited his position to harass retired employees.
