Jay Shah’s Heartwarming Gesture: ICC President Ensures Injured Pratika Rawal Receives Women’s World Cup 2025 Winner’s Medal

In an inspiring gesture that has touched cricket fans across the world, ICC President Jay Shah personally ensured that India opener Pratika Rawal received her Women’s World Cup 2025 winner’s medal — even though she was sidelined by injury before the semi-finals.

The 23-year-old batter suffered an unfortunate ankle twist during India’s final group-stage clash against Bangladesh, ruling her out of the rest of the tournament. She was replaced by Shafali Verma, who went on to play a starring role in India’s 52-run win over South Africa in the final at the Dr DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

While the Indian team lifted the trophy, fans noticed that Pratika, seen in a wheelchair during the celebrations, was without a winner’s medal due to ICC regulations allowing medals only for the 15 officially registered players in the final squad.

However, when the champions later met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi, Pratika was proudly wearing her medal — sparking an outpouring of love and curiosity on social media.

Her father, Pradeep Rawal, revealed to India Today that Jay Shah had personally stepped in to make sure Pratika’s contribution did not go unnoticed.

“Jay Shah personally texted us and said he had spoken to the ICC. He wanted to make sure Pratika got her medal before meeting the Prime Minister. It was his initiative — he personally informed Pratika himself,” Rawal shared.

Throughout the tournament, Pratika had been one of India’s most reliable openers, playing key innings that helped secure a semi-final berth. Even after her injury, she remained with the squad, motivating teammates from the sidelines as India went on to claim their maiden Women’s World Cup title.

This thoughtful gesture from Jay Shah not only underscores his leadership at the ICC but also highlights the spirit of inclusivity and recognition that defines modern cricket — celebrating every player’s contribution, on and off the field.
