Back into the wild-The Indian Scops Owls Gets a New Life!

India’s Scops Owl finds new life in Odisha, thanks to a village’s compassion and a conservationist’s vision.

Mr K. Shiva Kumar, a wildlife storyteller and photographer from Rayagada, Odisha, led a remarkable rescue mission that turned hunters into protectors.

Known as the “Owl Man,” Shiva has documented over 1,000 species and works with global conservation groups to protect India’s biodiversity.

In a tribal village in Odisha, an injured Indian Scops Owl landed at twilight. Traditionally viewed with superstition, owls were once hunted or sacrificed. But this time, villagers chose empathy. They contacted Shiva’s team, and despite rough terrain, the Wildlife Trust of India reached the site.

The owl was treated and released. In a symbolic gesture, it returned the next morning—its feathers tinted with herbal medicine used by the villagers. This moment marked a shift from myth to coexistence.

Shiva credits his education at the Central University of Odisha for shaping his conservation journey. He now trains local youth to become wildlife advocates, ensuring future projects thrive.

India hosts over 35 species of owls, each vital to the ecosystem. Shiva’s grassroots efforts, especially for the Rusty-Spotted Cat, reflect his commitment to preserving wildlife through community engagement.

This story isn’t just about one owl—it’s about transformation. A village once steeped in superstition now stands as a beacon of hope for wildlife conservation.

Contributed by K. Shiva Kumar, a professional Wildlife Storyteller (M.A in Journalism & Mass Communication, an alumnus of Central University Of Odisha, Koraput) from Hyderabad, Telangana.

K. Shiva is passionate about wildlife conservation. Through his work, he hopes to inspire greater appreciation for the wildlife that shares our planet and encourages conservation action.
